Arkam Ilyas, who was recently sworn in as the Deputy Minister of Power, officially assumed duties at the Ministry of Power today (24).
Deputy Minister Ilyas received his primary education at Ilma College in Matara and completed his secondary education at Rahula College, Matara. He holds a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Moratuwa.
He is a professional engineer and a member of the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL) as well as the Sri Lanka Strategic Engineers’ Association.
Arkam Ilyas also holds the distinction of being the first Muslim Member of Parliament elected from the Matara District through a public vote. He currently serves as the Weligama electorate organizer for the National People's Power (NPP).
