Nearly 770,000 charged for traffic violations this year

A special island-wide operation launched on January 12th has led to the arrest of 5,414 individuals directly identified in connection with various crimes, according to the Police Headquarters.

During the extensive operation, 129,448 suspects were taken into custody along with the execution of 56,365 outstanding warrants. Authorities said that a total of 6,127,138 individuals were subjected to checks as part of the campaign.

Meanwhile, 47,938 motorists were arrested for drunk driving, while legal action has been initiated against 769,933 individuals for traffic violations, including reckless and negligent driving.

The police also confiscated 2,097 firearms, including 67 T-56 assault rifles, 73 pistols, 50 revolvers, and 1,907 other weapons, between January 1st and October 22nd.

In addition, the raids led to major drug seizures across the country. The recovered narcotics include:

  • 1,482 kilograms and 820 grams of heroin
  • 14,434 kilograms and 468 grams of cannabis
  • 32 kilograms and 642 grams of cocaine
  • 582 kilograms and 136 grams of hashish
  • 2,542 kilograms and 454 grams of ‘ice’ (methamphetamine)
  • 3,961,790 narcotic pills
