Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) has introduced 20 additional self-service check-in kiosks to improve operational efficiency and enhance passenger convenience

The new additions equipped with self-bag-drop facilities bring the total number of kiosks to 28, allowing passengers to complete the entire check-in process independently. This includes flight check-in, seat selection, and printing of boarding passes and bag tags, before dropping off their luggage and proceeding to emigration counters.

The Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) stated that the upgrade is aimed at reducing congestion during peak travel hours, ensuring a smoother and faster experience for travelers.

Passenger traffic at BIA recorded a 16% increase in the first half of 2025, reaching five million passengers, with total traffic projected to rise to 14 million by 2027.

In addition, passengers departing from BIA can now check in up to four hours before their scheduled departure, following a new policy implemented last week to further streamline the departure process.
