The Department of Meteorology has issued a weather forecast warning of showers or thundershowers at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, and North-Western provinces, as well as in the Galle and Matara districts today (23).

According to the department, fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 75mm is likely in some areas within these provinces.

Meanwhile, several spells of showers are expected in the Northern and North Central provinces, while showers or thundershowers are likely to occur in Uva Province, and in the Batticaloa and Ampara districts after 1.00 p.m.

The Met Department further warned that strong winds between 40–50 kmph can be expected at times over the western slopes of the central hills, and in Western, Northern, North-Central, North-Western, and Southern provinces, as well as in the Trincomalee district.

The public has been advised to take necessary precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Sea Area Forecast

For the next 24 hours, showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kankasanthurai to Hambantota, via Mannar, Colombo, and Galle.

Other sea areas around the island are also likely to experience showers or thundershowers during the afternoon or night.

Winds will be south-westerly, with speeds ranging from 30–40 kmph, and may increase up to 50–60 kmph at times.

As a result, sea areas around the island will be rough at times, and temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas are expected during thundershowers.

The Meteorology Department has urged fishermen and naval communities to exercise caution and avoid venturing into rough sea areas during adverse weather conditions.
