The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal to begin initial work on the extension of the Kalaniweli railway line beyond Awissawella, aimed at improving public transport efficiency and expanding railway services under the 2025 Budget.

A sum of Rs. 250 million has been allocated for the commencement of preliminary activities related to the project, which includes rebuilding the new railway line parallel to the existing track.

The project will begin with a feasibility study and detailed plan preparation, for which the procurement process to select a consultancy firm will be implemented.

The proposal was presented by the Acting Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development.
