Prisons Commissioner and spokesman Jagath Weerasinghe has said that drug traffickers should be hanged, stressing the need for stronger deterrents against the spread of narcotics.

He made the remarks during the ‘No Place to Go’ lecture series held in Nawalapitiya.

Weerasinghe revealed that Sri Lanka’s 36 prisons, with a combined capacity of 10,500 inmates, currently house over 36,000 prisoners — 65% of whom are serving sentences for drug-related offences. He also noted that most individuals affected by drug use are Sinhala Buddhist youth.
