The Sri Lanka Police have issued a stern warning to media institutions against publishing or broadcasting CCTV and other visual or audio footage connected to ongoing legal cases.
In a statement, the Police emphasized that releasing photographs or videos related to cases pending before court, upcoming hearings, or investigations where photography is prohibited—whether through print, electronic, or online platforms—is strictly forbidden.
The directive also covers visuals or recordings, including those altered or generated using artificial intelligence (AI). The Police cautioned that such publications could interfere with investigations into serious crimes, sensitive incidents, and witness safety.
The statement further noted that only authorized officers designated by the heads of institutions, or the institutions themselves, are permitted to release official information. Accordingly, all such material should be disseminated to the media exclusively through the Police Media Division.
The Police warned that publishing prohibited, unverified, or AI-altered content could make responsible media personnel legally liable. If an aggrieved party lodges a complaint, the relevant institutions and individuals will face legal action, the statement added.
