The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has introduced new maximum retail prices (MRPs) for imported rice varieties in a move to stabilize the market and ensure fair consumer access to essential food items.

The new prices, effective from Monday (21), were announced through the Extraordinary Gazette No. 2459/12, issued under the Consumer Affairs Authority Act No. 9 of 2003 (as amended).

According to the order signed by CAA Chairman Hemantha Samarakoon, the revised MRPs are as follows: Imported Raw Rice – Rs. 210 per kilogram, Nadu Rice – Rs. 220, Samba Rice – Rs. 230, Ponni Samba (GR 11/Keeri Samba) – Rs. 240, and Kiri Ponni or Paal Ponni (GR 11) – Rs. 255 per kilogram.

This regulation replaces the previous price control order published under Gazette Extraordinary No. 2414/04 on December 9, 2024.

The CAA highlighted that no importer, supplier, distributor, or trader will be permitted to sell or offer these imported rice varieties at prices exceeding the newly prescribed limits.
