The Department of Meteorology has issued a ‘Red’ alert warning for heavy rainfall across multiple provinces of Sri Lanka. The warning covers the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-western, Southern, and Northern Provinces, as well as the Anuradhapura District.

According to the Met Department, a low-level atmospheric disturbance located to the east of the island has intensified into a low-pressure area, which is currently developing further and is likely to move west-northwestwards near Sri Lanka.

Due to the influence of this weather system, very heavy rainfall exceeding 150mm is expected in some areas of the affected provinces. The department has urged the public, especially those in low-lying and landslide-prone regions, to remain vigilant and follow safety instructions issued by local authorities.

Disaster Management units and relevant agencies have been placed on high alert to respond to any emergency situations that may arise as a result of the adverse weather conditions.
