The Irrigation Department has issued flood warnings for the lower areas of the Maha Oya and Deduru Oya basins, confirming that these alerts will remain in effect as water levels continue to rise.
Irrigation Director of Hydrological Disaster Management, Mr. Suriyabandara, reported that heavy rains are causing a significant increase in river water levels across several basins. Notably, Baddegama and its surrounding regions have recorded substantial rainfall, with Baddegama itself reporting the highest at 172 mm.
Areas along the Kalu, Kelani Rivers, Attanagalu Oya, and Kirindi Oya are also experiencing heavy downpours. The Director warned of the potential for further rainfall intensification in the Kelani, Kalu, Gin, Attanagalu, and Nilwala river basins, increasing the risk of disasters in low-lying locations.
In addition, Mr. Suriyabandara highlighted that the Kirindi Oya and Lunugamvehera reservoirs have gathered a significant volume of water, raising concerns about possible overflow.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and advising residents in vulnerable areas to stay alert and heed safety precautions.
