Heavy rainfall across Anuradhapura and the upper regions has led to the opening of two sluice gates of the Kalawawa Reservoir by two feet each, according to reservoir engineers.

This precautionary measure was taken to manage the increasing water levels and prevent a possible overflow situation. Officials report that 3,450 cubic feet of water per second is currently being released into the Kala Oya, helping to regulate the reservoir’s capacity.

Meanwhile, the inflow from upper catchment areas, including Dambulu Oya, has risen to 4,450 cubic feet per second, further contributing to the reservoir’s rising water levels.

Authorities have advised residents in low-lying areas along the Kala Oya to remain alert for possible flooding as heavy rainfall continues across the region.
