A new Division for Investigations into Proceeds of Crime was officially declared open this morning (20) under the patronage of Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala and Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasuriya.
The new division, established at the old Police Headquarters building, has been set up under the provisions of the Proceeds of Crime Act No. 05 of 2025 to conduct investigations related to assets and wealth obtained through criminal activities.
Senior Deputy Inspector General (SDIG) Asanka Karavita, of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID), has been appointed as the Director General of the new division, while Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) A. Gunathilaka will serve as the Deputy Director.
The division will focus on investigating illegally acquired money, property, and other assets. Under the new law, it is also mandated to support ongoing investigations conducted by 34 state institutions.
Furthermore, the division has the legal authority to investigate any form of asset accumulation suspected to be derived from unlawful activities. The Police Headquarters stated that civil cases can also be filed regarding property acquisitions not linked to criminal offenses.
Members of the public are encouraged to directly submit complaints to the division regarding any suspicious or illegal wealth accumulation.
