The Proceeds of Crime Investigation Division was officially inaugurated this morning (20) at the old building of the Police Headquarters in Colombo, under the patronage of Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Ananda Wijepala.

The new division has been established in line with the Proceeds of Crime Investigation Division Act No. 05 of 2025, which empowers law enforcement to investigate and act against the illegal accumulation of wealth.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Wijepala said the new law provides a strong framework to curb illicit financial gains, organized crime, and drug trafficking.

“This can be identified as a unique bill. It allows for the speedy implementation of the law with all necessary powers granted. If someone tries to acquire wealth illegally, all such attempts can be stopped under this Act,” the Minister said.

Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasuriya, who also addressed the gathering, described the Act as a landmark in Sri Lanka’s legal system, granting unprecedented powers to the police to combat financial and organized crime.

He urged officers to use these powers responsibly, emphasizing that they must be exercised for the benefit of the public and to uphold the rule of law.
