Train services along the upcountry railway line have been severely disrupted today (20) following a derailment near the Ihalakotte railway station, according to the Railway Department.

Officials stated that several major train journeys scheduled to operate from Colombo Fort to Badulla and Kandy have been cancelled due to the incident.

Among the affected services are the ‘Podi Menike’ express train scheduled to depart Colombo Fort at 5:55 a.m., and the Colombo–Kandy Intercity Express scheduled for 7:00 a.m.

In addition, the ‘Udarata Menike’ express train that was to leave Colombo Fort for Badulla at 8:30 a.m., as well as another express train scheduled for 9:45 a.m., have both been cancelled.

Earlier, Sri Lanka Railways had also announced the cancellation of two night mail trains scheduled for last evening (19).

The Railway Department has attributed the disruption to a derailment near the Ihalakotte railway station, which is believed to have been caused by a minor landslide in the area following continuous heavy rainfall.

Restoration work is currently underway, and railway authorities have advised passengers to check for updates before travelling.
