An intercity express train (No. 1010) travelling from Kandy to Colombo Fort at 3 pm yesterday derailed near Ihala Kotte Railway Station after heavy rains in the upcountry, the Railways Department confirmed.

  • Earth collapse hits train carriage

Officials said a mound of earth had collapsed onto one of the train’s carriages. Only a single carriage was affected, but the incident led to disruptions along the Upcountry Line.

  • Night mail services cancelled

Following the derailment, the Railways Department has cancelled the night mail trains running from Colombo Fort to Badulla and from Badulla to Colombo Fort.

  • Train operations restricted

All train services on the Main Line are currently limited to Rambukkana Railway Station as authorities assess the situation and work to resume normal operations.
