Nearly 30 local and foreign tourists visiting Wilpattu National Park were rescued after being stranded at the Eluwankulam entrance due to broken roads and heavy flooding.

The Eluwankulam Wildlife Office reported that the Eluwankulam entrance was submerged under more than six feet of water following heavy rains and the release of water from the Rajangana Reservoir, causing traffic to come to a complete halt.

Wildlife officials, along with safari vehicles, assisted the tourists and safely transported them back to the entrance. Arrangements were also made to transfer them to nearby hotels in the Eluwankulam area.

The Puttalam Disaster Management Unit stated that due to the overflowing Kala Oya, travel to Wilpattu remains impossible, and the road will remain closed until further notice.
