Health officials have raised concern over the increasing number of imported malaria cases detected in Sri Lanka this year, with 35 patients identified so far, all of whom had recently returned from foreign countries.
Specialist Community Doctor Indeevari Gunaratne said the infections were traced to individuals who had traveled to India, Thailand, and Myanmar, mainly for employment and gem trading. She noted that 34 of the patients have recovered, while one death has been reported.
Dr. Gunaratne emphasized that although local malaria transmission has been eliminated, the threat of reintroduction through travelers remains significant. She urged those planning to travel to malaria-endemic countries to obtain preventive medication from the Malaria Control Headquarters in Narahenpita or nearby regional health centers.
She further advised that anyone who develops fever or related symptoms within a year of returning to Sri Lanka should seek immediate medical care and inform their doctor of their travel history, as early detection is critical to preventing re-emergence of the disease in the country.
