President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said today that the government will not pass any legislation in Parliament that lacks public support, speaking on the Penal Code (Amendment) Bill submitted to ban corporal punishment.
Addressing the 28th conference of the Sri Lanka Teachers’ Union, the President emphasized that the bill has only been referred to Parliament for debate, and if the public rejects it, it will not be enacted.
He further stated that laws are created for the benefit of the people, not the rulers, and highlighted that while there was a time when even the Constitution was amended to favor those in power, the current government will never follow that practice.
