The Sri Lanka Navy has seized a multi-day fishing vessel suspected of trafficking narcotics in the southern seas, recovering approximately 53 kilograms of heroin on board, according to an official statement.
Acting on intelligence received about a possible drug smuggling operation, naval personnel had kept the suspicious vessel under surveillance before intercepting and taking it into custody.
The vessel was escorted to the Galle Harbour this morning (17), where a detailed inspection led to the discovery of the heroin stock, Navy Spokesman Captain Gayan Wickramasuriya confirmed.
Five crew members aboard the vessel were also arrested during the operation. The suspects, along with the seized narcotics, will be handed over to the relevant authorities, including Customs officials and the Police, for further legal action.
The Navy stated that it continues to conduct regular special operations in fishing and maritime zones to curb drug trafficking and will take strict measures against any such illegal activities in the future.
