A special discussion was held at the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) headquarters on Darley Road, Colombo, on the evening of the previous day, focusing on future political activities. Reports indicate that the meeting took place under strict secrecy.
From the SLFP, Nimal Siripala de Silva, Mahinda Amaraweera, Lasantha Alagiyawanna, Chamara Sampath, and Duminda Dissanayake were in attendance. Representing other opposition parties were Anura Yapa, Tiran Alles, Udaya Gammanpila, and Sanjeewa Edirimanne.
The meeting began with light conversation over tea. Nimal Siripala, offering refreshments, said, “Let’s have some tea.” When Udaya Gammanpila declined, saying he had already eaten, Lasantha Alagiyawanna added humorously, “We made milk tea, so at least have that.”
The group later turned to serious discussions about working together politically in the coming months.
“I play a big game inside Parliament — that deserves some appreciation,” said Chamara Sampath with a laugh. Gammanpila responded, “Of course, we respect the mission you are carrying out.”
Anura Yapa shifted the discussion, praising Namal Rajapaksa’s political outreach efforts, saying, “The work being done from village to village is valuable. People speak highly of it and ask why others aren’t joining in.”
As the meeting drew to a close, Duminda Dissanayake raised concerns about political backlash. “When we get into big work, revenge also increases. What does Namal say about that?” he asked.
Sanjeewa Edirimanne responded on behalf of the group, saying, “NR is ready to face any challenge.”
The meeting concluded with an understanding to strengthen cooperation among opposition parties in the coming period.
