The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka has dismissed two fundamental rights petitions filed by former Minister Wimal Weerawansa and Amani Rishad Hameed, which sought to invalidate the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed with India for the implementation of the digital identity card project.
The petitions were heard today before a three-member bench chaired by Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena.
The bench upheld preliminary objections raised by the Attorney General, ruling that the petitions could not proceed further. Consequently, the Supreme Court decided not to examine the merits of the petitions and declared them dismissed.
The MOU between the Sri Lankan and Indian governments pertains to the rollout of digital identity cards for Sri Lankan citizens, a project aimed at modernising national identification systems.
