An Agricultural Research and Production Assistant attached to the Diyaluma Agricultural Service Centre has been arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs. 1.2 million.

According to the Bribery Commission, the suspect had demanded a total of Rs. 3.5 million from a resident of Mahawa, promising to facilitate the allocation of a portion of government land for cultivation. He is accused of receiving Rs. 1 million initially, followed by Rs. 1.2 million from the balance amount.

The arrest was made yesterday (16) at around 12.15 p.m. at a restaurant in Athiwewa town along the Thanamalwila–Wellawaya main road, following a complaint lodged by the victim.

Investigations have also revealed that the suspect had obtained a receipt falsely stating that acreage tax had been paid for about 12 acres of government land illegally occupied and cultivated.

The suspect is expected to be produced before the Wellawaya Chief Magistrate’s Court.
