MP Namal Rajapaksa has accused the government of arbitrarily transferring police officers involved in sensitive arrests and major drug busts, warning that such actions undermine the integrity of law enforcement.
Rajapaksa alleged that whenever a person linked to the ruling party is arrested, the police officers responsible are promptly transferred. “If someone connected to the government is arrested and the public perceives them as a political activist, the officer who made the arrest is immediately transferred,” he said.
He also claimed that similar transfers occur after major drug seizures, with officers who provided crucial intelligence being removed from their posts. “Why are the officers who work tirelessly to curb the drug menace being transferred at random?” Rajapaksa questioned.
Commenting on the arrest of the Navy Commander, he warned against the misuse of police powers for political purposes. “The police should not be used outside legal channels. What happened in that case was wrong,” he stressed.
Rajapaksa said such politically motivated actions do not damage the JVP-led government alone but ultimately harm the credibility and morale of the police force itself.
He also mentioned that Sevwandi, who had been missing for a year, was recently found along with another individual described as a “dummy.”
