The Department of Meteorology has issued a weather forecast indicating that showers or thundershowers are expected in most parts of the island after 1.00 p.m. today (October 17).

According to the Met Department, fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 75 mm is likely in certain areas within the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva, North-Central, and North-Western Provinces. Showers may also occur in Western and Southern Provinces during the morning hours.

The public is advised to take adequate precautions to minimize potential damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Meanwhile, in the sea areas around the island, showers or thundershowers are expected in several places. Winds will be south-westerly or variable, with speeds ranging between 20–30 kmph, possibly increasing up to 45 kmph at times in the sea areas from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota.

The sea areas off Matara to Pottuvil are expected to be moderate at times, while other sea areas around the island will remain slight. The Met Department further cautioned that temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas may occur during thundershowers
