The decision was announced by Tourism Minister Vijitha Herath during a special meeting held today (October 16) at the Ministry of Tourism, with the participation of representatives from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), and several national sports federations.
The discussions primarily focused on attracting international visitors through the hosting and promotion of national and international sports events such as cricket, rugby, and football tournaments.
The newly formed committee also explored ways to capitalize on Sri Lanka’s growing reputation as a destination for sports and recreation, identifying opportunities to attract athletes, coaches, officials, and spectators who already visit the country annually for a range of sporting events.
Minister Herath emphasized that developing sports tourism could play a significant role in revitalizing the tourism industry, diversifying visitor experiences, and boosting local economies across the island.
