The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) stated that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 70 kilometers (43 miles) below the Earth's surface, approximately 200 kilometers (125 miles) from the city of Abepura.

So far, no reports of injuries or major damage have been reported, and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has not issued any tsunami warnings.

Indonesia is one of the countries most prone to seismic activity due to its location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," an area that experiences intense seismic and volcanic activity.
