Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Hemal Prashantha, Director of the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB), has been transferred as the Acting Commanding Officer of the Police Field Force Headquarters. Police said two other SSPs were also transferred by the National Police Commission, effective October 13.

SSP H.M.C.P. Herath has been appointed as the new Director of the PNB.

It was reported that SSP Prashantha had provided crucial information leading to the seizure of the largest drug haul in Sri Lanka’s history at sea yesterday. Police sources said that Prashantha, with 31 years of service, has never faced corruption charges. During his nearly two-year tenure as head of the PNB, the bureau seized almost two tons of drugs.

His intelligence helped the Navy recover 839 kilograms of drugs in 51 parcels off the southern coast, including 670 kilograms of ice, 156 kilograms of heroin, and nearly 12 kilograms of hashish. The operation was carried out under the direct supervision of IGP Priyantha Weerasuriya and Senior DIG Ranmal Kodithuwakku.
