The government will never use force to control the media, Director General of Government Information Harsha Bandara stated.
Speaking at a district-level workshop for journalists in Polonnaruwa today, Bandara emphasized the importance of acting according to regulations.
“The government does not intend to regulate through force. We believe in a ‘co-regulation’ process, where the government, public, media institutions, journalists, and media owners come together to uphold a media ethics code,” he said.
He also recalled a time when the Government Information Department could not even issue a letter of regret when journalists’ duties were obstructed.
“Currently, the Government Information Department intervenes in every case where journalists face obstruction in performing their duties,” Bandara added.
