78th Session of the WHO Regional Committee for South-East Asia begins

The 78th Session of the WHO Regional Committee for South-East Asia began in Colombo this morning (13). Sri Lanka is hosting the 78th session, which will be held over three days from today (13) to (15).

Healthy ageing through primary health care and combating smokeless tobacco are among the key priorities that regional health leaders will discuss at the regional committee session.

The session will be attended by WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Regional Director for South-East Asia Dr. Katharina Boehme, along with ministers of health from eight countries, ambassadors from two countries, and other WHO experts, who will set the region’s health agenda for the coming year.

The regional summit will adopt resolutions on key health issues, review progress on previous years’ resolutions, and renew action to promote, provide and protect the health and well-being of all people and restore the health-related Sustainable Development Goals.

Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne, Director-General of the World Health Organization Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization for Southeast Asia Dr. Katharina Boehme, and Secretary to the Ministry of Health and Mass Media Dr. Anil Jasinghe addressed the inaugural ceremony.
