A supermarket in Idangoda, Kiriella was fined Rs. 210,000 by the Ratnapura Magistrate’s Court on October 13, 2025, for selling a kilo of Kiri Samba rice at Rs. 295, above the regulated price.
In a separate case, a restaurant in Kudugalwatte, Ratnapura was fined Rs. 100,000 by the same court for selling a 500 ml bottle of water priced at Rs. 70 for Rs. 100.
Both fines were imposed following legal action taken by the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) against traders violating the government’s price control regulations. The CAA stated that raids and inspections are being intensified across the country to curb unfair trading practices and protect consumer rights.
