According to the Habaraduwa Police, the incident occurred yesterday (12) evening when the man reportedly attempted to obtain gas by adding a carbide-like substance to the toilet pit.
Residents rushed the seriously injured man to the Galle Hospital, but hospital sources said he was pronounced dead on admission.
The deceased has been identified as a resident of the Athawalawe area in Pilana.
Habaraduwa Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
