An investigation has been launched into an incident where a police officer allegedly assaulted a lawyer within the Mount Lavinia Court premises.

Minister of Health Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa stated that the investigation is being conducted impartially and without any political interference.

According to police reports, a complaint was lodged claiming that a police officer assaulted a lawyer during an incident that occurred while removing a lawyer’s vehicle from the court premises.

The police officer involved in the incident has been arrested and produced before the court. He was remanded until today (13)

Meanwhile, Mount Lavinia Police have also initiated an inquiry into a separate complaint that a senior lawyer accompanying the assaulted lawyer had verbally threatened and obstructed the duties of the police officer involved.

Police have received a CD containing video footage that reportedly shows the senior lawyer verbally threatening the officer. The footage has been submitted as evidence for further investigations.

Statements have been recorded from several individuals who were present at the court premises at the time of the incident. The investigation is being carried out under the supervision of the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of the Mount Lavinia Division.

The lawyer involved has also been summoned to the Mount Lavinia Police for questioning regarding the incident.

Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa confirmed that a formal and independent inquiry into the matter is already underway.
