Sri Lanka’s first dedicated boat launching pad, aimed at supporting the local marine industry by providing facilities to test new vessels, is under construction in Beruwala and is expected to be completed by March 2026, according to Industries and Entrepreneurship Development Minister Sunil Handunnetti.

With an investment of nearly Rs. 200 million, the project will help bridge infrastructure gaps that have limited large-scale vessel exports. The Minister noted that the government targets USD 100 million in boat-building export revenue this year.

He also revealed plans to develop the Nilwala River, Muthurajawela, and Elakanda canals to boost inland water transport. Meanwhile, the Boat Show & Conference 2026 is set to take place from January 30 to February 1, 2026, at Port City Colombo, marking the largest edition of the event to date.
