The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) says there are currently no legal provisions to take direct action against obscene videos created using artificial intelligence (AI) or other crimes targeting individuals through such means.

A senior official of the Commission stated that the TRCSL can only refer complaints related to such content to the respective social media companies, as the institution lacks authority to pursue legal action on its own.

However, the official noted that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the police are empowered to take legal action in such cases, while the TRCSL can provide technical assistance for those investigations.

Meanwhile, it has been revealed that a number of AI-generated obscene videos have been circulated on platforms including YouTube, Facebook, TikTok, and WhatsApp.
