The Department of Meteorology has issued an urgent weather advisory warning of severe lightning activity expected in several regions of Sri Lanka.

According to the announcement, the Eastern, Uva, and Central Provinces, along with the Polonnaruwa District, are at heightened risk of experiencing thunderstorms accompanied by intense lightning during the coming hours.

The Department further cautioned that temporary strong winds may occur during these thunderstorms, which could lead to property damage, power disruptions, and risks to public safety.

Officials urge the public to seek shelter indoors during thundershowers, avoid open areas, tall trees, and metal structures, and disconnect electrical appliances to prevent lightning-related accidents.

The advisory remains in effect until weather conditions improve.
