The Government of Sri Lanka noted that, having experienced the deep suffering and devastation caused by conflict in its own past, the country truly values the importance of peace and stability. Sri Lanka expressed hope that this vital step would pave the way for enduring peace and reconciliation in Gaza.
The statement commended the significant diplomatic efforts led by the President of the United States, and mediated by the State of Qatar, the Arab Republic of Egypt, and the Republic of Türkiye, to make the peace initiative possible.
While acknowledging the legitimate and sensitive concerns of both the Palestinian and Israeli peoples, Sri Lanka reaffirmed its unwavering support for the Palestinian people’s right to statehood. The country further urged both parties to engage in constructive dialogue to secure a sustainable peace and called for the early implementation of United Nations General Assembly resolutions that advocate for a two-state solution based on the 1967 borders.
