The Suraksha Sisu Insurance Policy, implemented by the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education, has been updated to offer expanded benefits for school students. The amended agreement between the Ministry and Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation General Limited, originally signed on July 1, 2024, was officially renewed yesterday (09) at the Ministry premises under the patronage of Education Ministry Secretary, Mr. Nalaka Kaluwewa.

Under the new agreement, several benefits have been enhanced to provide broader financial protection for students.

Key Health Insurance Benefits:

Residential Treatment (Government/Private Hospitals): Rs. 300,000/-

Outpatient Treatment: Rs. 20,000/-

Critical Illness Coverage: Rs. 1,500,000/- and above

Accident Insurance Benefits:

Total Permanent Disability: Rs. 200,000/-

Permanent Partial Disability: Rs. 150,000/-

Temporary Disability: Rs. 25,000/- to Rs. 100,000/-

Life Insurance Benefits:

Students from families earning less than Rs. 180,000/- annually, as well as those under the Aswesuma program, will receive Rs. 75,000/- per student in the event of a parent’s or legal guardian’s death. The maximum payment per family is Rs. 225,000/-, with the benefit applicable separately for the deaths of both parents or guardians.

The revised benefits will apply to incidents occurring on or after September 1, 2025, under the 2025/2026 program year.

Additional Amendments Effective from September 1, 2025:

1. The eligible annual income threshold for life insurance benefits will increase from Rs. 180,000/- to Rs. 240,000/-.

2. Students undergoing long-term treatment for critical and chronic illnesses—such as epilepsy, nephrotic syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, and rheumatic valvular heart disease—will now receive Rs. 20,000/- in external treatment benefits.

3. Benefits of up to Rs. 75,000/- will be available for scoliosis braces used to correct spinal deformities.

4. Up to Rs. 75,000/- will be provided for cochlear implants recommended by ENT specialists.

5. Benefits for lumbar guards and cervical collars—previously limited to accident-related cases—will now extend to non-accident-related medical conditions, upon specialist recommendation.

To claim benefits, students must submit all required documents, including the claim form certified by their school principal, to a regional branch of Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation General Limited.
