The Colombo High Court today (10) ordered the summoning of the case filed by the Bribery Commission against former Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal and four other defendants, scheduling the hearing for December 17.

The case alleges that the Sri Lankan government lost over Rs. 1.8 billion by investing government funds in Greek bonds in 2012, despite being aware of Greece’s economic crisis at the time.

The defendants appeared before Colombo High Court Judge Mohamed Mihal today. Lawyers for the defendants stated that several requested documents from the prosecution had not yet been provided. The Bribery Commission’s lawyer assured the court that the documents would be made available before November 3.

After considering submissions, the judge set the case for hearing on December 14.

The Bribery Commission has filed charges against Cabraal, former Deputy Governor Dharmasena Dheerasinghe, Don Wasantha Ananda Silva, Chandrasiri Jayasinghe Panditha Siriwardena, and M.A. Karunaratne, alleging that their actions caused a loss to the government by investing Rs. 1.84 billion in Greek government bonds during a severe economic recession.
