It has been revealed that 60 percent of school students in Sri Lanka suffer from depression, while 24 percent of students in higher grades are also affected, according to recent research findings.

Professor Miyuru Chandradasa, President of the Sri Lanka Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Association, said the study highlighted several key causes of mental stress among children, including intense academic pressure, family problems, excessive use of social media, and physical abuse.

He further said that the research indicated around 19 percent of the country’s total population shows symptoms of depression.

Professor Chandradasa made these remarks in connection with World Mental Health Day, which is observed today (10).
