7 arrested over death of 5-Year-old in Nugegoda swimming pool incident

Seven individuals, including the assistant principal of a preschool, the sports coordination officer, two teachers, a preschool employee, and two swimming instructors, have been arrested in connection with the tragic drowning of a five-year-old child at a hotel swimming pool in Nugegoda.

The incident occurred on the morning of October 8, 2025, at a hotel located on Stanley Mawatha, within the Mirihana Police Division. The Mirihana Police have launched a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.

Police identified the victim as a five-year-old resident of the Udahamulla area. Preliminary investigations revealed that the child had been attending a private preschool and was taking part in a swimming session organized for students under the supervision of teachers and a swimming coach.

According to reports, the child had drowned during the session and was rushed to the Kalubowila Teaching Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon admission.

Police say further inquiries are underway to determine whether negligence led to the incident, while the suspects are expected to be produced before the Nugegoda Magistrate’s Court.
