The Ministry of Science and Technology has identified that strengthening research and development (R&D) in the field of indigenous medicine can significantly contribute to the sustainable development of Sri Lanka’s health sector and national economy.
According to the ministry, enhancing scientific research in indigenous medicine will pave the way for the production of high-quality local medical products and services that can also compete in international markets.
As part of this initiative, the ministry has begun creating collaborative research programs aimed at promoting sustainable and innovative practices in the field.
A preliminary discussion on the matter was held under the patronage of the Minister of Science and Technology, Professor Krishantha Abeysena, with the participation of representatives from health service institutions, indigenous medicine faculties of state universities, the Postgraduate Institute of Indigenous Medicine of the University of Colombo, and leading private and affiliated research institutions under the ministry.
The discussion was described as highly productive, with participants proposing the appointment of a five-member expert committee to guide the next phase of R&D activities.
The meeting was attended by the Secretary to the Ministry of Science and Technology, Y.L. Mohamed Nawawi, along with doctors, scientists, and senior officials from relevant institutions.
