Speaking at the event, Minister Pathirana emphasized that the government is committed to reviving the national postal service, making it more efficient, income-generating, and technologically advanced. He noted that the postal service, unlike many other departments, both provides essential services and generates revenue.
Postmaster General Ruwan Sathkumara highlighted the importance of building public confidence in the postal system and aligning local services with global postal standards under the guidance of the Universal Postal Union (UPU).
During the ceremony, a commemorative stamp was issued, and awards were presented to high-performing postal offices and staff.
Sri Lanka’s postal service boasts a 227-year history, and like 193 other member countries of the UPU, it observes World Post Day annually on October 9.
