The appointment letters presentation ceremony for 294 new nurses joining the national health service will be held tomorrow morning (10) under the patronage of Minister of Health and Mass Media Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, at the auditorium on the first floor of the new Outpatient Department of the Colombo National Hospital.
Appointment letters will also be presented to nine speech therapists and six pharmacists at the event.
The new nursing officers, appointed as Grade III Nursing Officers, are from the 2019 student nursing batch who have successfully completed their three-year training program. The new Speech Therapy Officers hold Bachelor’s degrees in Speech and Language Therapy from recognized universities and have passed the Ministry of Health examination, while the pharmacists have completed a two-year pharmacy diploma.
Currently, the health sector comprises nearly 43,500 nurses, 100 speech therapy officers, and 2,000 pharmacists serving across the country. The new recruits will be assigned to hospitals under both the central government and provincial councils, with priority given to the Northern and Eastern Provinces. Their appointments take effect from October 15, 2025.
Secretary to the Ministry of Health and Mass Media Specialist Dr. Anil Jasinghe, Additional Secretary (Administration) Chamika Gamage, Director General of Health Services Dr. Asela Gunawardena, and other senior officials are expected to attend the ceremony.
