Around 10% of Sri Lanka’s population suffers from various mental illnesses, according to the Ministry of Health.

Director General of Health Services Dr. Asela Gunawardena revealed that about 2% of the population is affected by severe mental health conditions.

Speaking at the national commemoration ceremony for World Mental Health Day held today (08), Dr. Gunawardena warned that these mental health issues have significantly contributed to the rising number of suicides in the country.
