Vehicles that were returned by former Presidents can be reissued to them, as the recently passed Presidents’ Entitlements Bill does not cover security arrangements provided to former leaders, Minister of Public Security Ananda Wijepala told Parliament today.

Last week, the bulletproof vehicle used for the security of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa was returned.

Rajapaksa’s media spokesperson, Attorney-at-Law Manoj Gamage, said in a statement that the vehicle was handed over on October 3 through the relevant company.

He said that following the enactment of the Presidents’ Entitlements (Repeal) Act, the Presidential Secretary had informed on September 24 that all official vehicles and the official residence of the fifth Executive President must be returned.

Gamage added that the passenger vehicle assigned to Rajapaksa’s security detail was also handed over, a situation that he claimed has endangered the former President’s safety.

“We plan to meet with the IGP, the Defence Secretary, and the heads of the security forces next week to request the necessary vehicles for Mahinda Rajapaksa’s protection,” he said.
