One person died and two others were hospitalized after being swept away while swimming near Blue Beach Island in Nilwella, Dikwella, yesterday (06).
Police said the incident occurred around 3.30 p.m. when three individuals who had entered the sea were caught in strong currents.
Local residents rushed to assist in the rescue operation, managing to save two of the swimmers, while one person was pronounced dead.
The body of the deceased, a 32-year-old man from Medaviyangoda, has been taken to the Bathigama Hospital morgue.
The two survivors, aged 51 and 38, are receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Matara General Hospital.
