A 17-year-old student of Vijitha Maha Vidyalaya, Dickwella, tragically drowned in the school swimming pool while attempting to retrieve a cricket ball.
The incident occurred while the student, who was in the 12th grade, was playing cricket with his classmates on the school grounds.
The cricket ball had fallen into the swimming pool, and the student entered the water to recover it when the accident happened.
The body of the deceased has been taken to Bathigama Hospital morgue. Dickwella Police are conducting further investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
