The Department of Meteorology has announced that atmospheric conditions remain favorable for thunderstorms across the island this evening. The public is urged to take necessary precautions to minimize damages caused by strong winds and severe lightning during thundershowers.
According to the latest forecast, showers or thundershowers are expected at most places of the island after 1.00 p.m. Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50mm is likely in parts of the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, Central, and Uva provinces.
In addition, a few showers may occur in the Western and North-Western provinces and in Galle and Matara districts during the morning hours.
Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers may also occur at several places in the sea areas around the island. Winds over these sea areas will be south-westerly or variable, with speeds between 25–35 kmph. The sea conditions will be slight to moderate, though temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas are possible during thundershowers.
The Meteorology Department advises fishermen and naval communities to remain alert for sudden changes in weather conditions.
