The Governments of Sri Lanka and Antigua and Barbuda have formally established diplomatic relations with immediate effect following the signing of an agreement on October 3rd, 2025, in Washington D.C.

The agreement was signed by Sir Ronald Sanders, Ambassador of Antigua and Barbuda to the United States, and Mahinda Samarasinghe, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the United States.

This new partnership marks an important milestone in strengthening cooperation between the two nations within the framework of the Commonwealth and other international platforms.

Sri Lanka previously hosted the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in 2013, while Antigua and Barbuda is set to host the next gathering of 56 member nations in 2026.

Ambassador Sanders expressed optimism about the new collaboration, stating that “Antigua and Barbuda and Sri Lanka can work together to ensure the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting is a success for the Organization and all member states.”
