Police said the group traveling in the van had been on their way from Kurunegala, after visiting a relative’s house, to Dimbulagala when the accident occurred. The van had collided with a tipper truck transporting sand from Welikanda to Colombo.
Investigations reveal that the van driver had fallen asleep at the wheel, leading to the accident. Reports further indicate that the tipper driver had made a considerable effort to avoid the collision.
The injured were first admitted to the Hingurakgoda Base Hospital and later transferred to the Polonnaruwa General Hospital for further treatment.
